How I Will Apply Foley Sounds To My Short Film-Planning

 The Importance of Foley Sounds:

Foley sounds is one of the most important parts of the sound design in my groups short film. Foley is the process of recreating everyday sounds and then adding it to our short film during post-production. Foley sounds is what helps make the scenes feel more realistic and helps the audience feel more connected to those specific scenes. With these types of sounds being added to my film it will make the dropping of a pill, car door closing, or footsteps feel more clearer and more purposeful.

Planning Foley Sounds For Characters:

When planning the foley sounds for my film, I want to think about how each character moves and interact with their environment. I was think that Lena, Claire, and Micheal will each have their own times when small sounds will help enhance their actions. For Micheal when he is picking up the phone or dropping the pill in drink can have foley sounds added for the actions to feel more real. In Claire scenes foley sound could be used for clothing movements. Lena's footsteps when she walks aways to the bathroom to match the surface she is walking on.

Foley for Key Actions in Film:

They are many moments in my short film when Foley sounds will help with the visuals. For example, the sounds like the door opening, footsteps, or objects being placed down somewhere can be recreated and layered into the scene when I am editing. From the outside, the sounds may seem small but they help make the environment feel more natural and I planned from the start to record these sounds myself using everyday objects around my house and then later layer and sync them with the visuals during editing.

Using Foley Sounds To Support The Mood:

Foley sounds also supports and sets the mood for the audience in the short film for the scenes of Lena, Claire, and Micheal. Like, if a a moment in the short film feels tense or uncomfortable highlighting certain sounds like footsteps can make the moment feel more intense. On the other hand, softer sounds can help create a more calmer or more believable feeling scene.

How To Create Foley Sounds At Home

This video helped me understand more how simple movements and objects can be used to recreate the sounds for film scenes The same way how the video is pouring the water with a microphone right next to it, I will put a microphone right next to the cup when the pill is being dropped into the cup.
